apples
i was waiting in line today at the chinese market when i noticed the woman ahead of me. she had a lot of produce stuffed in her duffel bag, all toppling out when she upturned it for the cashier to weigh. when the cashier loaded her apples on the scale, i realized that there was a bite missing from each of the five or so apples.
so i had a few thoughts:
- was she taste testing? what would've happened if the apple didn't taste good? would she return it to the pile?
- she's kind of stealing because by biting from the apple, the apple is now lighter, and she doesn't have to pay for the stolen bit already consumed
- this isn't normal, right?
the cashier registered little reaction and wore just a slight smirk. i would've thought she'd go postal on this woman, but she almost acted like it was a completely normal exchange.
maybe i'm the weird one.
