today i made lentil soup

after watching "food, inc." at an event last night and noshing on "sustainable, local, organic" snacks, I walked home thinking that i would never again eat non organic foods, save being stranded on a desert island where the only food available was heaven forbid a beef patty made of cows fed with genetically modified corn. because i could never do it justice, I won't go into the highlights of "food, inc." except to recommend it.

on that burst of inspiration, i headed to safeway to see how i could make my life more organic. now, i love safeway. granted, i love all grocery stores, but i particularly like the safeway near my rental unit because it is smaller and lovely and has samples once in awhile. but gosh, it was hard to find organic produce at reasonable prices. so much easier to buy a pack of hot dogs and be done with it. in the past few months, when buying meat, i've tried to buy the organic kind because we've all seen those horrific cases of e. coli in bad meat, and i am not about to go down because of bad meat, no sirree. i wish i could tell you that it tastes better, but i really can't tell. it costs more for sure, but what can you do.

anyways, one of the guys at the "food, inc." viewing mentioned that he was a huge fan of dried goods because they cost pennies and last forever. so i bought a bag of lentil beans (not organic, safeway brand, 1.25) and decided to follow the recipe on the back to make lentil soup, of which the recipe bragged was "rated four stars by our taste kitchen." what an endorsement! i bought organic carrots (99 cents), two organic onions (99 c a pound), a bunch of organic kale ($2.00), and some beef sausage (probably made of the hooves of a million cows, but i'm trying to ignore that pretty little fact right now).

unforch, my camera is out of batteries otherwise i would have shown you what i made but so far it smells delicious! i am a soup loving girl but can soups sometimes can be so tiring and blah. Blah blah blah, so i am delighted that this seems a strong contender!

update: i just tried it and it TASTES delicious too! K.O., Campbells'!
