pics from asia!
So last week we came back from a fun trip to Asia! Here are some pic highlights:
we had a six hour layover in singapore (1 - 7 am) and instead of lolling about their beautiful airport, we got a cab and went to a outdoor food court recommended by the stewardess. i got big tiger shrimp and j got pan fried noodles. both were tasty. we then decided to check out a 24 hour indian shopping mall, a five minute cab ride or fifteen minute walk away. asking the fruit juice man at the food court whether it was safe to walk around at night, he threw his hands up and went, "it's singapore! of course it is safe!" duh, i guess.
boarding the plane and a short layover in korea later ("annyoong!") we finally got to bangkok! the first thing that becomes very apparent is that the thais are very serious about their monarchs. there are gigantic pictures of them everywhere, and it is extremely rude to say anything bad about them. in fact, the guidebook warned that if a money bill was flying away because of the wind, not to put your foot down and step on the bill (printed with the monarchs' faces) to stop it. we saw the latest james bond movie later in the week and before the movie started the audience had to stand as a video montage of the monarchs, with the national anthem, rolled. we missed the king's birthday by about a week, but i imagine there was much celebration done in his honor!
there are also tons of street food vendors, which were fun to try out. it's about 30 baht to 1 USD, so at 10 satay skewers for 40 baht, you're looking at complete and tasty meals for 3 dollars or so. (pad thai/see ew was about 50-60 baht, thai iced tea 30)
towards the end of our time in thailand, i was feeling mighty confident having eaten a fair amount of street food (hello, we live in chinatown?), but i managed to eat something off in phuket and could only stomach french fries and fruit for a few days. suspects:
shrimp
clams
baby octopus
filet o fish
the jury's still out, but my friends, it was gnarly. i kind of suspect the clams because they look tricky, but who knows. on another food note, their mcdonald's ("mcthai" as it says on the receipt) sells these tasty chicken wings that are tom yum flavored. i hope the wings come around stateside sometime soon!
