bitter
after reading and hearing about the praises to the sky of the powers of the bitter melon, i decided to take it for a test drive and make a juice of it. a random yelp reader suggested blending it with green apples, cucumbers, and green bell peppers. i wish i took a picture of the team together, they looked really cute in their pleasant green-ness.
we washed, peeled, chopped, and crammed it into the juicer.
(while we waited for the juicer to do its thing, i told an amusing* anecdote about a simpsons' episode where there was a tv ad hawking a juicer and the host put in a whole crate of oranges only to get a few measly sprinkles of juice out. ::slapping sides of face:: "ALL THAT?")
dr nick kills me!
anyways, the juicer finished and we all gathered around the fateful substance. we took turns taking a sip.
so not to kill the suspense, but it tasted bitter. not enough that it was downright UNDRINKABLE, but it also wasn't something you would casually order at j@mba juice either. the cucumbers, apples, and bell peppers kind of didn't pull their share in masking their bitter brother. i think it's one of those things that you consume because you know it's good for you. (See cherry-flavored cough medicine, hardcore chinese herbal teas, hardcore whole wheat bread.) a friend mentioned that his dad makes it with apple juice, which i bet makes it so much more sweet and delicious! so we might revisit.
