hooked

Crafts are really hard for me. I love things that turn out great the first time and never really took to heart the whole "practice makes perfect" thing. I have a halfway done plush calculator stuffed in a closet somewhere at my parents' house that was supposed to be a christmas present for J in 2008. It looks just as ridiculous as it sounds, and after realizing i could never make it half as awesome as it was in my head, i got frustrated, stopped, got in the car, and drove to the mall to buy a present. this mentality makes real, adult crafts near impossible.

until one day i was casually reading a blog and came across this picture:

(https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiPTYKgtIF6WCW4kGekh7VPLxx-YX11uGiUGxsw-Q2jUDEybdjdZ-3dhVrWfAEoBTC2cUVLVEm7VADirOy2UgdeCbVmvGkbocOUDO-WFkyZlyr3cOH88N43uv6oRUqOCNyq5JctWTfhxIo/s400/photo.JPG)

i gasped with how awesome they were - hipster baby onesies, KNITTED. what can i say, i wanted one for myself! grand illusions started painting themselves in my head - i would make these for all my expecting friends! what a beautiful present, nevermind that we live in a mediterranean climate that seldom allows for such wool outfits - these were going to be fantastic!!! babies turning somersaults in them, picking wildflowers, it was all coming true!!!

but you know, knitting's hard and it's not like i would learn it from youtube, so back on the backburner went those onesies. a few months later i found a living social deal for knitting or crocheting classes at a nearby yarn shop. (i have since learned that the acronym is LYS, or local yarn shop.) i basically picked crocheting over knitting because the class promised that by the weekend's end, we would have made a stuffed bunny, and i find bunnies neat. my great aunt gave me some crocheting hooks, a darning needle, and some yarn. off i went.

this is my bunny, i have no idea what i'm going to do with him:

so by the weekend's end (two classes, two sessions of two hours each), i was hooked (har har). the teacher was very very patient, matter of fact, and good at teaching beginners. the yarn store where the class was held was filled with lots of beautiful soft yarn, and with the living social coupon i got 30% off, so i got enough yarn to make a scarf. you can't really tell from the photo, but it's a super satisfying teal-sliced-heavily-on-kelly-green color.

i'm hoping to finish it soon so that i can wear it this winter!!!
