camping, quartet, plant
1. we took the ytfers camping a few weekends ago and had a fun time, minus the gross cold i managed to pick up: my throat was itchy on friday night, my voice dropped a few notes by breakfast, i couldn't get through a sentence without clearing my throat at morning devotionals, and i could barely squeak out any words at the swimming pool in the afternoon 'cause it felt like speaking through a bent straw. i also felt increasingly cold. i'm currently on the heady upswing of recovery a week plus later, but am still battling a stubborn cough. our campsite was really beautiful though, all high up in the hills, very isolated from other campsites and with a stunning view of the sunset.
2. on notice from sffuncheap, i went to a free string quartet concert at a small art gallery in uptown oakland. they played a series of menelssohn quartets, and it was really lovely. i'm always so impressed by the beauty people can extract from what is essentially a carved piece of wood. i was one of about ten people in the audience and it made me sad that these four quartet members were playing their hearts out, for about 2 hours, to an audience that they could count with the fingers on two hands. with that passion and talent, they should be playing to hundreds!
3. i have been nursing my houseplant back to vitality for the past few weeks or so. after reading an article citing the results of a nasa study finding that certain houseplants were good at removing toxins in the air, i went out and purchased one of my very own. now, i don't know if it's because our apartment has particularly noxious air, or if i just have a black thumb, but my plant always looks like it's on the brink of death. i water it and put it on the windowsill to feed it some sunlight, which temporarily perks it up, but by the end of the day it's back to its limp self. the little tag that came with the plant warned against overwatering, but i'm wondering if my plant is just super thirsty and my bad i'm depriving it of nutrients?
