at least i like the chips
aside from the ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY upkeep that keeps our apartment from looking and smelling like a pigsty, i'm not that big on cleaning. my favorite, if you can call it that, chore is to vacuum, mainly because i find it incredibly satisfying when i see a big heap of dust and lint in the vacuum. that's the only thing i really maintain once a week.
i read somewhere that the difference between a good housekeeper and a bad one is one hour a day. inspired, i decided that every day, i would complete at least one cleaning task. the first day i replaced the foil covering the ranges on our stove because they were getting icky, and cleaned off the stove counter top as well. another day i swiffered the floor. then i cleaned the microwave, folded laundry. it works pretty well because even though they're little tasks, at least it's getting done and my housewife conscience is quieted.
somewhat along those lines, i've also been trying to eliminate unnecessary chemicals. cosmetics wise, it's a little tricky. i don't wear make-up regularly (though i think at some point in the near future i need to implement that), but i like to wear a moisturizer with a sunscreen. this website lists the hazardousness (not a real word, you get my gist) of thousands of products: http://www.ewg.org/skindeep/. it has been hard to find a suitable sunscreen. the night cream i recently bought with organic plastered all over it registered a four on the hazard scale. boo!
cleaning wise, i've been starting to use lots of vinegar in my cleaning. it has lots of anti-bacterial properties, and i am hugely comforted by the fact that i could eat drink vinegar and it's cool. the only downside is that immediately after use it temporarily smells like salt and vinegar chips, but that smell subsides as it dries. i also really like salt and vinegar chips, so no sweat off my back. last night i microwaved a bowl of water and vinegar to deodorize the microwave and made the novice mistake of opening the door after it was done, and taking a big deep inhale to see if the deodorizing worked. i choked on the steamy vinegar air and had to blink a few times to get it out of my eyes. j looked up and remarked that he was craving chips.
i also want to try making laundry detergent. apparently it's wildly cheaper and with its simple three or four ingredients, lets you sleep restfully knowing that there are minimal additives being used to wash your apparel.
XOXO,
